Translucent Stretch Ceilings
Translucent stretch ceilings that make the ceiling the light
A translucent stretch ceiling replaces the usual grid of spotlights with a single luminous surface. Light placed above a light-diffusing membrane spreads into a calm, shadow-free glow, so the ceiling itself becomes the lighting.

Light behind a translucent membrane
Bare LED strips show as hot lines. As the translucent film is fitted below them the lines blur into one even glow, which is then dimmed up and down. The supplier film transmits about 75% of the light.

What is it?
A translucent stretch ceiling is a light-diffusing membrane stretched across a perimeter profile, with a lit cavity behind it. Seen from below it reads as a smooth, softly glowing plane rather than a series of fittings.
How it works
- A lightweight perimeter profile is fixed to the walls at the chosen ceiling height.
- Light sources, such as LED panels or strips, are positioned in the void above the plane.
- The translucent membrane is tensioned into the profile so it stays flat and wrinkle-free, and the light passes through it and diffuses.
Key design characteristics
- Even, glare-free illumination across the full surface
- Can be a single large field or divided into panels with slim framing
- Dimmable when paired with a suitable driver and control
- Works with warm, neutral or cool white light, or colour-changing light
Benefits
- Shadow-free, comfortable light that suits long working or resting hours
- A clean, uncluttered ceiling with no visible fittings
- Makes windowless or low rooms feel brighter
- Seamless joins in most room sizes
Practical considerations
- It needs a lighting void above the membrane; the depth required depends on the lighting layout and should be confirmed on site.
- Light sources behind the membrane need to be reachable for future service, so access points are planned in advance.
- Brightness and colour consistency depend on the lighting design, which we review with you before fabrication.
Suitable spaces
- Living rooms
- Pooja rooms
- Corridors and lobbies
- Clinics and waiting areas
- Offices and meeting rooms
- Retail displays

Design possibilities
- Plain white luminous fields
- Framed panel grids with slim profiles
- Warm or cool white temperature choices
- Colour-tinted membranes for feature zones
- Cut-out or shaped light panels within a flat ceiling
Lighting integration
Typically lit from behind by LED panels or evenly spaced LED strips. The spacing of the sources and the distance to the membrane determine how even the glow looks, so we plan these together.
Architectural lighting optionsInstallation and maintenance
- A site visit and measurement come first, so the perimeter profile, any bulkheads and every light position can be planned before fabrication.
- The membrane is made to the measured room and tensioned into the profile on site, usually after wet trades and painting are complete.
- Because the ceiling sits below the structural slab, the available void depends on the room. Ask for a void check if you plan to add lighting behind the membrane.
- Dust the surface gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth. Avoid abrasive pads and solvent cleaners.
- Keep sharp tools and hot work away from the membrane. Ask us about repairs rather than attempting one yourself.
- If the lighting behind the membrane ever needs servicing, use the planned access panel instead of lifting the membrane.

- Light spreads evenly across the surface, with customised colours and dimming controls.
- Shapes include arrows or symbols, rings, and curved or arched forms, as well as chevrons and ring lights with a glowing edge.
- Dimmable by touch panel, table-top rotary, mobile app or remote, and compatible with Tuya, Alexa, Google Assistant, Zigbee, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.
Details we confirm with you
These details depend on the exact products selected. We confirm them in writing for your project rather than quoting figures in general:
- Membrane grades and available widths
- Heat tolerance of the membrane close to lighting
- Minimum lighting void depth for the chosen light source
